Getting started

Use context-aware keyboard shortcuts

Find available actions and use verified shortcuts while respecting the active page, input focus and dialog state.

Before you begin

1. Open shortcut help

Use the displayed keyboard-shortcut help control or the configured Shift+? shortcut. The command dialog searches actions for the current context and includes an action only when its matching page element exists.

2. Use encounter navigation sequences

From an eligible encounter view, press g, then o for Observations; g, then m for Medicines; g, then s for Service Requests; g, then d for Diagnostic Reports; g, then f for Files; g, then n for Notes; or g, then c for Consents. These are two-key sequences, not simultaneous chords. The prefix sequence expires after two seconds.

3. Use the correct page action

On the patient home context, e creates an encounter and s schedules an appointment when the corresponding actions exist. On an appointment, 1 starts consultation, 2 creates the planned encounter and 3 prints the appointment. Check the visible action before using the key because the same key can mean something else in another context.

4. Keep focus and overlays in mind

Ordinary letter shortcuts are skipped while typing into an input, textarea or editable content unless that screen explicitly opts in. Encounter shortcuts are suppressed while a sheet or dialog overlay is open. Close or finish the dialog and move focus out of a text field before trying a navigation key.

5. Confirm the effect

A shortcut triggers the corresponding displayed action. It does not grant a missing permission or bypass record-state checks. Confirm the correct patient, encounter and resulting screen before continuing.

Common encounter commands

The source also maps a to Add Allergy, d to Add Diagnosis, k to Add Medication, f to Forms, l to Assign Location and Shift+U to Update Encounter. Availability still depends on the current action element and permissions.

Modifier-key display

Shortcut badges format modifiers differently by operating system. Use the badge and current help dialog; this guide does not assume that every browser or keyboard layout handles a displayed modifier identically.

Touch screens

Use the visible buttons and menus on touch-only devices. The keyboard shortcuts supplement the actual controls.

Troubleshooting

A letter shortcut types into a field instead of navigating

Move focus out of the input or textarea. The shortcut handler deliberately skips normal text-entry fields.

A navigation sequence does nothing

Press the second key within two seconds, confirm no dialog overlay is open and check that the action exists in the current context.
