Create and verify a base specimen definition
Complete the required specimen catalogue fields, choose an installed collected type, save the definition and verify its persisted defaults.

Verification and applicability
Seven actual 1920 × 1080 original f6e9 Chrome screenshots and seven narrow hash-bound steps. Normal existing Laboratory Facility Admin created one synthetic specimen definition through the ordinary form. Independent normal detail/list GET200 verifies UUIDc2ac7947…, own Laboratory68fbdcd2…, Active, exact controlled slug, HL7 v2-0487 BLDV/Blood venous, false/false/Preferred tested defaults and empty optional fields. This base checkpoint precedes the separate optional metadata update.
Check your installed version, permissions and local configuration.
Before you begin
- Sign in with your existing authorized Facility Admin account and select the intended Laboratory. This observed account already has specimen-definition read/write permissions; no membership or role is changed.
- These screenshots use a clearly synthetic reusable definition. No patient specimen, specimen collection, patient order, real collection protocol, billing item or external transaction is created.
1. Open the specimen catalogue in the intended Laboratory
Open Settings → Specimen Definitions as the existing authorized Facility Admin. Confirm the Active filter and the initial No specimen definitions found state. Use Add Definition to begin the synthetic catalogue example.

- Specimen Definitions: Open Settings → Specimen Definitions in the intended facility.
- Search definitions: Search the reusable specimen catalogue.
- Status Active: The initial list filters Active definitions.
- Add Definition: Start a new synthetic catalogue definition.
- Empty catalogue: No specimen definitions match this initial view.
2. Identify the required fields
A blank Save shows required feedback for Title, Slug, Description and Type Collected. Active is already selected. Enter a unique short slug of 5–25 characters using the allowed letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens.

- Title required: Enter the synthetic catalogue title.
- Slug required: Review a unique 5–25 character short slug.
- Description required: Explain the synthetic catalogue scope.
- Type Collected required: Select an actual installed terminology result.
- Active default: This example retains Active.
3. Enter the synthetic identity and select a real lookup result
Enter SYNTHETIC specimen catalogue teaching, the short slug synthetic-specimen-teach and the illustrated synthetic-only description. Search BLDV in Type Collected. The normal installed lookup returns Blood venous; select this actual result.

- Synthetic identity: Review the clearly synthetic title.
- Controlled slug: Review synthetic-specimen-teach.
- Type search: The actual lookup search is BLDV.
- Returned Blood venous: Select the installed result rather than entering an arbitrary code.
4. Review the selected type and defaults
Confirm Blood venous, Active, the synthetic identity, Is Derived off, Single Use off and Preferred. In this actual form the previous Type Collected Required hint remains until Save revalidates the selection. Collection and patient preparation remain unselected in the base example.

- Selected type: Blood venous is now selected. The prior Required hint has not yet revalidated.
- Active: The base example retains Active.
- Is Derived off: The default Is Derived switch remains off.
- Single Use off: The default Single Use switch remains off.
- Preferred: The default tested preference remains Preferred.
5. Review optional container fields and save once
Scroll through the remaining form. Retention time, Requirement, container Description, Cap, Capacity, minimum-volume Text and Preparation remain empty in this base example. Review the defaults and use Save once. This saves a catalogue definition, not a patient specimen.

- Tested switches: Is Derived and Single Use remain off.
- Preference: Preferred remains selected.
- Retention time: No retention time is configured in this base example.
- Container description: Optional container details remain blank.
- Minimum Volume mode: Text is selected with an empty value; no quantity is configured.
- Save: Save the reviewed base definition once.
6. Find the saved Active definition
On the returned list, search SYNTHETIC specimen with Active selected. Confirm the synthetic title, description and Active row badge. Use View to open the persisted record; Edit is a separate maintenance action.

- Search: Search SYNTHETIC specimen with Active selected.
- Saved title: The new synthetic definition is listed.
- Active row: The saved status is Active.
- View: Open the persisted specimen definition.
- Edit: Edit is a separate maintenance action.
7. Verify the persisted detail
Confirm the saved synthetic title, Active, description, Blood venous, Is Derived: No and Single Use: No. Independent normal detail and list GET200 reads confirm the same UUID, facility-scoped slug, actual BLDV HL7 coding and saved Preferred default. Delete is not used.

- Saved title: Verify the intended synthetic catalogue item.
- Active: The persisted status is Active.
- Description: The record remains clearly marked as synthetic training.
- Type Collected: Blood venous is persisted.
- Is Derived No: The saved switch value is No.
- Single Use No: The saved switch value is No.

Catalogue setup and actual specimen work
A Specimen Definition stores reusable catalogue metadata. Creating or editing this definition does not collect a specimen or document a patient result. The illustrated descriptions, requirement, container and preparation notes explicitly identify training content.
Role and source version
This guide is observed with one existing Laboratory Facility Admin on original f6e9 screens. The source grants specimen-definition writes to Facility Admin/Admin and read rights to additional roles. The presence of a generic control is not proof of another role’s authorization or every facility variant.
Additional branches
Collection coding, patient-preparation coding and its add/remove/duplicate behavior, Derived From URI, cap coding, retention/capacity quantities, numerical minimum volume, status lifecycle and activity requirement linking require their own pictured sequences. They are not qualified by the base definition or text-only update. The backend also has a Handling structure that the pinned specimen form does not expose as a field.
Troubleshooting
Required remains visible after choosing Type Collected
In this observed sequence the prior Required hint stayed visible immediately after selecting Blood venous. The next normal Save revalidated the selected value and successfully created the definition. Confirm the selected result and review actual Save feedback; do not create an arbitrary code.
The newly saved row does not immediately appear
Wait for the list to finish loading or use an explicit search with the intended Status filter. The illustrated search SYNTHETIC specimen refreshed the Active list and returned the saved definition.
